Effect of polyethylene surface chemical modification on wettability

By polyethylene surface modification the wettability of it to water has been improved.Firstly,hyperbranched polymer containing hydroxy group has been synthesized by maleic anhydride and diethanolamine in this paper,and grafted it onto the surface of polyethylene lamina by chemical modification.And then we treated grafted polyethylene lamina with sodium hydroxide solution at 80 ℃.The results showed that the optimum condition of grafting reaction was as follows: weight ratio of hyperbranched polymer and polyethylene lamina was 1∶1;mass fraction of initiator was 0.9%,and concentration of sodium hydroxide solution was 1.0 mol/L.The contact angels of water on modified polyethylene had decreased from 84.0° to 50.6°.The hydrophilicity of PE has been increased.
