Pore structure characterization of black shale in the lower Cambrian Niutitang formation in western Hubei and eastern Chongqing area

The study of pore structure characterization is of great significance to the assessment of the gas content property in shale reservoirs.By total organic carbon(TOC),X-ray diffraction and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption experiment,we obtain TOC value,mineral composition,pore volume,specific surface and pore size distribution of Niutitang formation black shale in western Hubei-eastern Chongqing area,and then discuss the nanoscale pore development controlling factors.Research shows that sedimentary facies control of mineral components,the later control of pore development,and the condition of pore development reflect different types of adsorption isotherm,pore size distribution,pore volume and specific surface distribution frequency.Black shale in shallow-water shelf facies has a higher content of carbonate minerals,and quartz and clay content is relatively lower,while shale in the deepwater shelf facies almost does not contain carbonate minerals,and quartz and clay content is relatively higher.Black shale can be divided into three categories according to the characters of isotherm and adsorption loop,which correspond to shallow-water shelf facies black shale with higher carbonate minerals content,shallow-water shelf facies black shale with medium carbonate minerals content,and shallowwater shelf facies black shale almost without carbonate minerals.It is different in pore volume,specificsurface and pore size distribution whether black shale contains carbonate minerals or not.Correlation analysis shows that abundance of organic matter and minerals components control the development of black shale microscopic pore differently in the western Hubei-eastern Chongqing area.Quartz and clay content mainly controls the development of microscopic pore;TOC has very little impact on pore volume but is good for specific surface area.Carbonate minerals content has nothing to do with the total pore volume.However,the high content of carbonate minerals is beneficial to the increase of macro-pore volume.In addition,the content of carbonate minerals restricts the development of black shale specific surface area.
