Monitoring technology for embankment dam safety based on distributed optical fibre sensing and its prospect

Knowing the operating condition of an embankment dam exactly is the base to guarantee it to operate safely.There is a growing need for real-time monitoring systems for embankment dams,due to problems of hidden dangers.The main detection parameters for health monitoring of an embankment dam are analyzed.The principle of operating of a monitoring technology based on distributed fiber sensing for embankment dam safety is introduced.Recent application of the technology is presented.The prospect of the application of the technology of distributed fiber sensing adapted to the detection of seepage flow and movement in China has been discussed.Some weak points in current safety monitoring instrument based distributed optical fiber sensing technology for the soil embankment dam is presented.Helpful suggests are given to design next generation instruments,which provides a guide to construct a new safety monitoring system for an embankment dam.
