Advances in continental dynamics research in China:Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese geophysical society

This paper briefly reviews the history,characteristics and main achievements of continental dynamics research in China as well as main problems existing in the research and offers related suggestions for improvements.(1) Continental dynamics research in China began with the publication of J.S.Lee's paper "Main Cause for the Morphological Change on the Earth's Surface" in 1926.In this paper he affirms the revolutionary significance of the continental drift theory and points out its disadvantages,promotes and persists in the study of crustal movements and deformation by using the mechanical principle,advocates the use of multidisciplinary methods and structural system view to summarize structural movements and deformation and emphasizes exploring the feasibility of occurrence of geological processes in the context of the principle.This is one of the glorious traditions of China.(2) In the current research on continental dynamics,we take deep survey as the basis and lithosphere as the target to perform a study of 3D evolution.It is proposed that continental dynamics research is a comprehensive discipline based on the theoretical knowledge of geology,geophysics,geochemistry,geodesy,geomechanics and high-temperature/high-pressure experimental geology.It provides a basis for the study of mechanisms for Earth mineralization and occurrence of earthquake and volcanic geohazards.This is the main trend of the development of the current Earth sciences and this trend is deepening and expanding steadily.(3) The deep survey in China began in 1958–62,when Zeng Rongsheng et al.performed seismic sounding tests in the Qaidam basin.The scale of work was extended in the 1980s and then it has deepened and expanded continuously with the development of the international geosciences.Research has been undertaken in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,Dabie metamorphic terrain,Qinling orogenic belt,South China granite terrain and South China Sea marginal basin and now is being carried out in the Tianshan orogenic belt and North China continental region(where continental lithospheric thinning and breakup are studied).In addition,seismic belts and metallogenic belts are studied throughout China.The abundant scientific achievements obtained have attracted attention of the international geoscience community.4.The author's main understandings of the work are as follows: for the study of the Earth's deep interior,we should take the crust and upper mantle as the targets and strive to integrate this study with approaching the problems concerning actual mineral resources and environmental science so as to deepen our knowledge;it is necessary to adhere in applying multidisciplinary methods,with special emphasis on strengthening tectonodynamic analysis,upgrading the technical level of deep survey, improving processing methods and raising the level of softwares and attaching importance to the collection and study of deep xenoliths;for continental deep drilling,we should closely combine the work with comprehensive investigations;while mainly relying on our own efforts,we should actively cooperate with foreign countries and bring our research more in line with international research and cannot go with the "tide" blindly.5.The paper points out that there exist the phenomena of "scarcity","chaos","falseness" and "overbearing" in China's continental dynamics research,and then it analyzes the root-causes for these phenomena and provides countermeasure suggestions for their improvements.What requires us more to do now is that we should have high aspirations to take our own road and create a good academic "environment".
