Elimination of polarization noise in electrical detection of landfill leakage

The electrical detection of landfill leakage is widely used to locate leaks in the liner. The potential anomaly induced by the current flowing through the leaks determines the leak location. When the leak current is small, the abnormal potential is easily submerged by polarization potential noises in the detecting electrodes resulting in a failure of leak locating. We suggest adopting low-frequency alternating square-wave power supply to eliminate polarization potential noise. The experiments results show that one of the two leaks in the liner is detected when the loop current is 70 mA and the electrode above the liner is connected to the positive pole of a power supply. All the two leaks cannot be found when the electrode above the liner is connected to the negative pole of a power supply with the same loop current. The two leaks are all located by the result of subtraction between the two experimental data.
