Application status and vistas of electromagnetic methods to deep ore prospecting

Geophysical methods (particularly electromagnetic methods) have been very successfully used to discover economic base metal and precious metal ore resources.A common view is that all mineral deposits within 500 m of the surface,and close to existing infrastructure,have essentially been discovered and exploited,and are rapidly being depleted.Because of the high cost of installing new infrastructure in green field areas,the modern challenge is to determine if there are deeper deposits at economically recoverable depths (typically 0.5 to 2 km) within or close to existing deposits and infrastructure.Discovering deep ore needs large scale geophysical methods' supporting. Application status of electromagnetic methods (EM) to deep ore prospecting,study progress of EM data process and interpretations and EM instruments are introduced in the paper.Some examples are given to show application efficiency of EM techniques to deep ore prospecting.Some promising aspects of the applications of EM techniques to deep ore prospecting are presented.
