THE REFRACTED WAVES AND MULTIPLE WAVES IN CHAI-DA-MU BASIN BY LOW-FREQUENCY SEISMIC REFRACTION WORK

TSENG JUNG-SHENG HO CHUAN-DA KAN YUNG-CH (Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology, Academia Sinica)
The records obtained from the low-frequency refracted work carried out in Chai-Da-Mu Basin are characterized by fruitful multiple waves. It has been confirmed by both the velocity logging materials and the refracted records themselves that within two or three kms from the ground surface, there exist several contact zones which possess velocity gradients. The energy of these seismic rays returns back to the ground surface, when they travel at grazing angles within these zones of varying velocities. These refracted waves have undergone little energy conversion, therefore their high order multiples can be detected with strong intensities even at a distance of 10-30 km from the shot point. The multiples obtained in Chai-Da-Mu Basin include:(1) the multiple refrac!ed waves; (2) the reflected refractions; (3) the refracted reflections and (4) the multiple reflected reflections. The properties of these multiple waves and the methods of their discrimination are described. It was noticed also that these multiple waves have shown prominent directivities in their receiving. The cause for such directivities are discussed.
