SEISMIC WAVES IN MULTILAYERED ELASTIC HALF-SPACE (Ⅰ)

The propagation problem of seismic waves radiated from general types of sources in a multilayered homogeneous isotropic and perfectly elastic half-space is studied. It is shown that the Haskell layer matrix can be defined in an alternative form with all its elements real and dimensionless for all real values of wave number, so as to facilitate theoretical analysis and numerical calculation. Using Haskell matrix method, the response spectra of multilayered elastic half-space to plane body waves, the dispersion equations for both Rayleigh and Love waves, the relative excitations of surface waves at any depth, and the particle motion condition for Rayleigh waves at free surface and at any depth are derived in detail. Finally, by using Hansen's expansion method and Haskell matrix formulation, the spectra (formal solution) for the displacement fields due to general types of sources in a multilayered elastic half-space, especially those due to various elementary types of dipolar sources, are given.
