ON THE INTENSITY ANOMALY OF THE HINGTAI (邢台) EARTHQUAKE OF MARCH 22ND, 1966.

YAO CHEN-HING CHEN PEI-SHAN HSIAO CHENG-YEH HSU KUO-MING (Institute of Geophysics, Academia Sinica)
The Hingtai earthquake of March 22nd, 1966 caused greater damage in the Tsing-sing (井陉)-Huailu (获鹿) area at an epicentral distance of about 90 km than that in the Luancheng (栾城) area which is only about 50km from the epicenter. It is believed that this anomalous distribution of intensity is principally due to the totally reflected S waves from the Mohorovicic discontinuity. In order to identify these waves, the crustal structures of the area were investigated. The effect of the various soil conditions on the surface as well as the fracture zones and others on seismic intensity was also discussed.
