Kp CATEGORY OF MAGNETIC DISTURBANCE AND FLARE ACTIVITIES

ZHANG GONG-LIANG of Space Physics, Academia Sinica)
A practical and physically based category of magnetic disturbance by means of the Kp diagram has been proposed, which takes into account the relation between two fundemental processes of magnetic disturbance: the sudden commencement and the main phase. The statistical studies between the flare activities and the different types of magnetic disturbance during the years 1936-1958 confirm further our earlier finding of the N-S and E-W asymmetries in the solar-geomagnetic relationship. Also, there are evidences that the characteristics of magnetic disturbance show some relation to the magnetic types of solar active region producting flare, and to the propagation velocity of solar disturbance in the interplanetary space.A tentative picture of the interplanetary shock propagating anisotropieally in the spiral magnetic fields has been suggested to explain the statistical results obtained.
