THE CHARACTERISTICS OF REGIONAL GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF TARIM BASIN, CHINA

This paper discusses the basement structure and the characteristics of regional geological structure of Tarim basin on the basis of its aeromagnetic data. The author points out that there is an ancient crystalline basement which evidently controlled the development of the basin in its late stage. Through analyses of the gravimetric, magnetometric and seismometric data, the author discusses the general features of development of the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic sequences in this region, and divides the basin into the following geotectonic elements: the Central upwarped Zone, the Southwestern downwarped Zone, the East-Tarim downwarped region, the North-Tarim upwarped region, the Kuche piedmont depressed Zone and the Southeast-Tarim Fault Block Zone. The development of the fractures and the distribution of basic rocks of Variscan age are also mentioned. Finally, a preliminary evaluation of the oil-bearing perspective of the Southwestern downwarped Zone and the East-Tarim downwarped Region is proposed.
