ACOUSTIC EMISSION OF ROCK SPECIMEN IN DEFORMING PROCESSES

The main objects of the present investigation of acoustic emission of rock specimens are: to study the time and spatial distribution of acoustic emission events and to study the amplitude-frequency relation of acoustic emission signals. Since there is a close similarity between the study of acoustic emission activity and that of the seismicity, the former may throw some light on the latter.Eecent results in the study of A. E. activity are reviewed and the effect of stress levels, loading time duration and history on the A. E. activities (i.e., the characteristics of A.E. activity as the pressure monotonically increased) are discussed. It was pointed out that some difficulties still exist in the prediction of rock failure even in laboratory experiments, and some suggestions are made.
