EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF ELECTROMAGNETIC EMISSION DURING ROCK FRACTURE

XU WEI-MIN TONG WU-SHENG WU PEI-ZHI (Seismological Bureau of Anhui Province)  
A laboratory experiment which deals with electromagnetic emission induced by fractures of the samples of limestone, granite and quartzite is presented. The experimental results show that the electromagnetic signals occurring in the fracture process of quartz-bearing rock samples have the following characters: their amplititude is in the shape of a pulse; as stress level increases, the frequency of signals increases too; and it's tendency is basically similar to acoustic emission signals; before the occurence of main-fracture there are two different signal types for different structure medium: quiescence and climax. Besides, between the process of main-fracture and break-down, these quartz-bearing rock samples flash clearly and the strongest electromagnetic impules appear at the same time. Some preliminary discussion about the experimental results are also presented here.
