THE STUDY OF THE IONOSPHERIC EFFECTS OF A NUCLEAR EXPLOSION OBSERVED AT LARGE DISTANCE UTILIZING THE HF BACKSCATTER TECHNIQUE

JIAO PEI-NAN(China Research Institute of Radiowave Propagation, Xinxiang)  
The ionospheric effects of a lower-atmosphere nuclear explosion, which were observed by HF backseatter on 1976, are described. The HF backscatter sounder was located near Xinxiang, where the distance is 2205 km away from the site of explosion. The parameters of the additional ionization and the ionospheric disturbance due to the nuclear explosion are obtained. The agreement between these results and the results of other experimental methods is satisfactory.
