NORTH-SOUTH ASYMMETRIC PROPAGATION OF FLARE-ASSOCIATED INTERPLANETARY SHOCK WAVES

The possible model of flare-associated shock wave propagating in the meridian plane has been deduced from the north-south asymmetry in cosmic ray Forbush decreases, by using the dimensionless jump conditions of MHD. The results show that the propagation of flare-associated shock wave in the meridian plane exhibits a north-south asymmetry relative to the flare normal, and the direction of the fastest propagation velocity tends to the heliospherical current sheet; A region of intensive magnetic field is in the north part of shock wave and weak in the south. On the other hand, a region of higher dynamical parameters (such as velocity, pressure and plasma β parameter, etc.) is in the south part and lower in the north. Transverse expansion towards north-south is also asymmetrical. This physical model is consistent with the results from interplanetary scintillation observations and could explain the north-south asymmetrical effects in the flare-associated geomagnetic disturbances and cosmic ray Forbush decreases.
