SHEAR HEATING AND PARTIAL MELTING OF GRANITE——THERMAL STRUCTURE AT OVERTHRUSTED TERRAINS IN THE GREATER HIMALAYA

ZHU YUAN-QING (University of Science and Technology of China. Hefei)SHI YAO-LIN(Graduate School, USTC, Academia Sinica, Beijing)
Granites to the north of the main central thrust fault (MCT) in the Himalaya are found of crustal sources. High heat flow in this region is suggested to be an indication of recent meg-matic intrusion to the upper crust. Mechanism for the formation of crustal melting are studied in this paper. Contributions of three main heat supplies: frictional or shear heating, radiogenic heating, and mantle heat flow, are investigated. Special attention has been paid to the nonlinear rheological properties of rocks which affect stresses and heat generation on the fault. Thermal effect of fusion heat on the temperature profile is also included. It is found that although radiogenic heating and supply of heat from the mantle can cause melting of the crust, the melting, however, would start from the bottom of the lower crust. This is in contract to the observed evidences of granites formation at the middle of the crust. Such observation can be explained only if shear heating exists near the fault.
