THERMAL MODELING OF THE FORMATION OF LEUCOGRANITES IN THE HIGHER HIMALAYA

Leucogranites in the Higher Himalaya was formed by partial melting of crustal rocks in the mid-crust, that required a temperature higher than 650℃ at 20Ma.Subduction of Indian plate brings surface rocks beneath the Higher Himalaya and tends to produce an overall cool environment, previous hypothesis, which usually only emphasizes a single factor, are incapable to explain the high mid-crust temperature. In this paper, finite element thermotectonic modeling was carried out. The computation results indicate that a special inverted geotherm, higher temperature in the mid-crust and lower temperature in the lower crust and upper mantle, can be produced by combination of a number of factors: episodic activation and cessation of major faults,frictional / shear heating, high radiogenic content and low thermal conductivity cover,high rate of denudation, warer supply from the foot wall to the hanging wall, etc.The Higher Himalaya leucogranite belt is thus formed by pantal melting of crustal rocks in an environment created by the combination of the above factors, missing of any one of the factors would prevent the partial melting, therefore, the occurrence of leucogranites is scattered.
