The concept of maximum earthquake magnitude has been widely used in seismichazard analysis. For most continental areas of the world, application of tradihonalmethods, such as geological analysis and tectonic analogue methods, are facing greatdifficulhes due to lack of detailed geological survey data. Based on historical seismicrecords and employing the concept of maximum historic earthquake, the basic idea ofkernel function is introduced and a new method for determinahon of maximumearthquake magnitude is proposed in the present paper. Systemahc comparison studyof seismic hazard analysis resultS obtained with different methods implies that it isqinte feasible to apply this new method to prachcal use. The new method not only issuitable for regions with no or less detailed data of geological strUctUres, surfacedeformation, etc., but also can reflect tO some extent the fractal characterishcs ofearthquake distribuhon in space.
