THE CHARACTERISTICS AND A POSSIBLE MECHANISM OF SEMIANNUAL VARIATION OF f_0F_2

MA RUI-PINGXU JI-YAOLIAO HUAI-ZHE(The Lab. of Space Weather,Center for Space Science & Applied Research,Chinese Academy of Science,Beijing 100080,China)  
Ionospheric data observed at different geomagnetic latitudes in East Asia and Australia sector and two polar stations during 1974\_1986 are used to analyze the characteristics of f_0F_2 semiannual variation. A new mechanism of ionospheric f_0F_2 semiannual variation is put forward in this paper. The semiannual variation of the diurnal tide in lower thermosphere induces the semiannual variation of the amplitude of equatorial electrojet. This causes the semiannual variation of the amplitude of equatorial ionospheric anomaly through fountain effect. This process induces the semiannual variation of f_0F_2.
