Magnetic susceptibility and its environmental significances

Magnetic susceptibility (x, mass-specific; or κ, volume-specific) has been widely used for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental studies. However, there exist ambiguities when accurately interpreting this mineral magnetic proxy. This review systematically discussed the major factors that affect susceptibility, including the type and grain size of magnetic minerals, temperature, frequency and the applied field etc. Finally, applications of magnetic susceptibility to both marine and terrestrial paleoclimatic records were outlined.
