THE THEORY ON NONLINEAR INTERACTION OF ROSSBY WAVE PACKETS IN THE MIDDLE ATMOSPHERE

In the frame of weak nonlinear theory,a set of equations deplcting the nonlinear Interaction of Rossby wave packets In the dissipative middle atmosphere are derived. The numerical analysis show that variations of the wave packets are influenced by the dissipative and non-linear interaction. When an intense wave packet with middle wave number propagates through the dissipative atmosphere, it likely decays into secondary waves through three wave interactions.If the amplitudes of secondary waves varies with space and the group velocity of the intense wave is between that of the two secondary waves, there may be absolute instability.The Rayleigh friction and frequency dismatch can raise the threshold value above which the instability may set in.
