PROGRESS IN EARTHQUAKE MONITORING AND PREDICTION IN CHINA IN RECENT FORTY YEARS

This paper summarizes the progress in earthquake monitoring and prediction in our'country in recent forty years. It outlines the main advances according to three stages:1949-1966, 1966-1976, 1976-1990 and puts emphasis on the new developments during the 1980's. It includes twelve aspects as follows:1. The significant improvement in seismic observation. 2. The adjustment and optimization of precursor monitoring networks. 3. The establishment of serial methods for noise recognition and rejection in precursor monitoring. 4. The comprehensive characteristics of earthquake precursors in China. 5. The compilation of instruction for analysis and prediction.6. The affirmation of the contents and methods for multidisciplinary earthquake prediction.7. The trial application of system science in earthquake prediction. 8. The development and tryout of expert system for earthquake prediction. 9. Efforts made for detecting short-term and immediate precursors. 10. The compilation of the 1990 seismic zoning map of China.11. The compilation of the prediction map of 5-10 year dangerous regions in China,12. The compilation of the prediction map of losses from earthquake damages in China.
