FREQUENCY PROPERTIES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC EMISSION ASSOCIATED WITH MICROSCOPICCRACKING IN ROCKS

A mechanism that low frequency electromagnetic emission(EME) observed duringrock fracture can result directly from the emission of electrons associated withmicrocracking in rocks was proposed. The model of a compressed atom is used to explain the source of electrons that emit from the atoms around the tip end of acrack during microcracking. Consequently, EME can be modeled by an electric qua-dripole associated with the distribution of positive and negative charges around acrack that expands at speed V during microcracking. Using the model,the frequencyrange of EME can be determined. For typical rock samples studied under labconditions,the frequency ranges of EME are calculated to vary from about 50kHzto 2MHz, Which are comparable to the ranges observed in lab experiments.
