COUPLING BETWEEN MANTLE CIRCULATION AND LITHOSPHERIC PLATES:(II)THE MANTLE's MIXED CONVECTION MODEL AND ITS APPLICATION TO EXPLANATION OF PLATE VELOCITY FIELD

The observed plate velocities contain two types of motions:poloidal andtoroidal fields which have nearly equal kinetic energy distribution between them.The purely mantle's free convection driven by buoyancy is unlikely to genarate thetoroidal component in the observed plate velocities.As the second part of suceessive research,in this paper we present a mantle's mixed convection model that combine the effect of the free convection and the force convection excited by platemotion.The results show that the plate velocities predicted by the mixed convection model contain not only the poloidal component but also the toroidal fieldwhich are well compared with the observed fields in the spatial patterns and thepower spectra.The predicted upwelling flow and downwelling flow correspond toridges and subducted zones respectively.
