AN EXPERIMENT OF SLANT VISIBILITY MEASUREMENT BY LIDAR

Zhao Yan-zeng, Tao Li-jun and Hao Nan-jun(Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Academia Sinica)  
A primary experiment was carried out to measure the slant visitility in an airfield by lidar in 1977. In order to extract the optical thickness from the lidar equation the "horizontally homogeneous" model was used for lower atmosphere. Observations show that the "horizontally homogeneous" condition is met provided that the visibility R ranges from 1 to 5 km. It is important to point out that the parameter A in the visibility equation can no longer be taken as a constant along the '' air-to-ground'' direction. The brightness contrast should be measured simultaneously, and the contrast threshold ?will be larger than 0.02 when the observer is in high speed motion. In comparison with pilot observed visibility it was found that 0.04 is a better choice for e.
