OPTICAL DEPTH OF ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOLS AND THE VALID RANGE OF ■NGSTRM FORMULA

The variation of the optical depth of atmospheric aerosols has been analysed based on measurement data under different atmospheric conditions. The accuracy of Angstrom formula is estimated. The agreement of Angstrom formula with measurement data and the valid range of the Angstrom formula are discussed. The result shows that: 1) in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions only 20% of the measurement data are in close agreement with Angstrom formula; 2) when aerosol optical depth is smaller than 0.1, the Angstrom formula is essentially invalid; 3) using wavelengths 3800 A and 5000 A for the determination of Angstrom parameters, as suggested by WMO, may produce a larger relative error; 4) application of the Angstrom formula should be limited to the visible spectral region and turbid atmosphere; moreover, the Angstrom parameters should be determined by the use of multispeetral solar radiation data in the whole visible region instead of two wavelengths.
