SEISMIC POUNDING RESPONSES OF BRIDGES WITH HIGH PIERS

Based on a reoccurring motif in the mountainous areas of the West-bridges with high piers,a fibre element model of a bridge of interest was established,followed by a detailed analysis of free vibration characteristics.Manipulation of the model enables the investigation of collisions of gap elements inserted between each set of adjacent expansion joints.Elaborate computation,comparison,and manipulation of raw data were conducted using the non-linear time history analysis methodology.Via observing the pounding responses to various seismic waves as well as the impacts of such collisions on the structure,it is evident that the spectrum characteristics of seismic waves along with the natural frequency of the modeled structure are key factors concerning its pounding responses.Furthermore,pounding could be beneficial to certain discrete components of the structure,to some extent.
