FRACTURE FAILURE MODES ANALYSIS OF BRIDGE CABLES

To lengthen the service life of bridge cables,its failure modes must be ascertained.According to investigation of bridge-testing data from home and abroad,and fracture analysis of steel wires of bridge cables fetched from testing ground using electron microscope scanning,two special fracture(cascade fracture cup and cone-shaped fracture) failure modes of steel wires of bridge cables have been analyzed.The results show that cascade fracture mainly arises from corrosion fatigue;the main reason that leads to cup and cone-shaped fracture is plastic failure which is caused when steel wire corrosion is not serious and external load exceeds ultimate load carrying capacity of steel wire.
