Role of MAPK in hypertensive myocardial hypertrophy

Objective: To investigate the role of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the pathogenesis of hypertensive myocardial hypertrophy. Methods: The study was carried out in rats in 2 groups, the hypertensive group induced with constriction of the abdominal aorta and taking high salt diet and the control. The NPY level in plasma and cardiac tissue and the activity of cardiac mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) were measured. Results: Heart weight, NPY levels and MAPK activity were significantly elevated in the hypertensive rats (P 0. 05 to 0.01 ). There was a positive correlation of myocardial MAPK activity to left ventricular hypertrophy (r= 0. 809, P 0.01 ). Conclusion: MAPK system is possible involved in the pathophysiology of hypertensive myocardial hypertrophy induced by NPY.
