The functional and morphological changes of the kidneys induced with lipopolysaccharide(LPS)were observed in rats,It was found that the functional changes of the kidneys began in the lst h after LPS administration, became conspicuous in the 5th h and restored the normal in the 48th h.The morphological changes accompanying the functional changes were constriction of glomerular capillaries, neutrophil and platelet accumulation in the capillaries, swelling and proliferation of the endothelial and mesangial cells, fusion of the foot processes of the podocytes, degeneration and necrosis of the tubular epithelial cells and formation of casts. These findings suggest that the neutrophils and mesangial cells of the glomeruli play an important role to mediate the LPS-induced renal damages.
