PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE CHINEST LOESS RESEARCH: A DISCUSSION ON THE REALITY OF FACTS AND MYTH

Geological studies should focus on human beings, with consideration of sustainable development diversifying study areas, and selecting what should be done. The Chinese loess research underwent fore stages: finding, comparison, and destination, and in the future we need to pay more attentions to the destination studies. Now, based on the various paleoclimatic information documented in the Chinese loess, Chinese scientists have targeted their studies on understanding the mechanism of global aridification and the human impacts on environment. They also broadened their studies from regional to global scales and proposed the concept of "Geoenvieonmental System." In the respect of fundamental research, they have discussed: (1) the continuity and hiatuses of loess-soil sequences (punctuated equilibrium); (2) the monism of loess formation and distribution on global scale; and (3) the relationship between the loess geomorphology and neotoctonics. Whereas in the respect of applied field, they discussed: (1) the relationship between the human health and the geophysiology in loess regions; (2) the problem between the urban development and the loess engineering; and (3) and the relationship between agriculture and the regionalecosystemassement, They further argued that the loess research have been challenged by the development in both social and technical fields, anyway, the most important challenge is from themselves.
