RESPONSES AND FEEDBACKS OF SOILS TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

Soil covers the land surface and functions essentially to sustain the global ecosystem. Pedogenic processes respond to environmental changes during the Earth's history and in turn, cause the feedback mechanisms in different ways to environmental changes. This paper reviews the recent progress in three aspects, i.e ., paleosols and their record of environmental change, soil evolution since the appearance of human civilization and the main trend of soil and environmental changes in the future. It was pointed out that soils are not only a historical natural body, but also form a pedosphere with its own behavior towards the Earth system. Various kinds of paleosols, such as buried paleosols and residual paleosols, were summarized: their formation condition and implication on environmental changes. The study of paleosols can yield abundant information about environmental change and may also be useful to predict changes in the future. The paper also discussed soil evolution since the appearance of human civilization. Human may impact on soils into positive and negative ways. Human activities could form anthropogenic soils which represent the improvement evolution but could also cause severe soil degradation with inappropriate management. The industrialization and urbanization have resulted serious soil and environmental deterioration. The countermeasures against the current soil degradation are suggested from soil science point of view, aiming at the sustainable development of the society.
