Based on the geochemical and mineral analysis several red soils developed on granite and basalt were investigated. The studied profiles scattered at the coastal region of South China, mainly at the Pearl River Delta and at West Guangdong. The results indicated that the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) can be used as an indicator of chemical weathering intensity. The ratios of Al 2O 3/SiO 2 and kaolinite+illite vs quartz for whole rock indicated the intensities of both chemical weathering and erosion. The relationship between Al 2O 3/SiO 2 and CIA can be used to differentiate changes caused by natural chemical weathering and by erosion. When the CIA has a big warp it may indicate the abnormity change in weathering factors, when the Al 2O 3/SiO 2 has a remarkable warp it can be considered the increase of erosion intensity that may symbolize the increase of artificial disturbance. The results imply the fact that the natural process plays a major role in variation in geochemical characteristics of red soils, the disturbance of human activity is becoming more and more severe. The human activity, in fact, has affected the ecological environment and natural characteristics of the red soils and changed in some degrees the local climate condition.
