An experiment study of blunt impact on goat and human chins

Objective: To investigate the mechanical relations among mandible, tempolmadibular joint (TMJ) and skull during blunt impact on chins. Methods: Fresh heads of 12 goats and 2 males were divided into two groups according to the velocities.The impact direction was vertical to the junctional line of both side of TMJs along the chin; the impact mass weighed 12.1 kg; the impact velocites were V1= 1.1 m/s, V2=1. 6 m/ s. Results: ①For goat heads, the impact time (T) and the time that took the impact force to reach its peak values (Tp) of V1 group [(34. 72±5. 79) ms, (17. 97±3. 37) ms] were both slightly longer than the V2 group [(31. 15±2. 15) ms, (15. 40±2.19) ms] without statistic differences (P0. 05); howewer,the peak values of impact forces (Fp) of V, group [(312. 86±51. 19) N] were lower than the V2 group [(492. 01± 76. 60) N] (P0. 01) .②For human heads, T and Tp of V1 group [(44. 14±3. 33) msi (20. 78±3. 04) ms] were longer than the V2 group [(39. 23±1. 60) ms; (19. 51±1. 58) ms] without statitic differences (P 0. 05); but Fp of V1 group [(169. 20±23. 58) N] were lower than the V2 group [(319. 42±35. 7) N] (P 0. 01) .③Comparing goat head groups to human head groups, when the impact velocities were the same,the goat head groups had shorter impact time than the human head groups (P0. 01) , but the peak values of impact forces of the former groups are significantly high (P0. 01). Conclusions:①The changing curve of impact forces of goat and human heads were different, and we think this difference is caused by the anatomy differences of their TMJs. ②The human TMJ can well cushion the impact forces.
