Effect of Astragalus root injection on T cell subsets of pulmonary tuberculosis patients and its short term curative effect

AIM: To observe the effect of Astragalus root injection on cellular immunity of pulmonary tuberculosis patients and its short term curative effect. METHODS: 56 active pulmonary tuberculosis patients were divided into therapy group and control group at random. While on the same antiphthisic chemotherapy program, Astragalus root injection (20 mL/d, iv gtt) was added in the therapy group. The therapy effect was assessed by the determination of fasting peripheral blood T lymphocyte subpopulation CD3, CD4 and CD8 pre and post therapy, by the sputum smear and by the chest X ray change pre and post therapy. RESULTS: The levels of CD3, CD4 post therapy were significantly higher than those pre therapy in therapy group ( P 0.01). No significant difference was found in CD8. The absorption rate of nidus in pulmonary therapy group was significantly higher than that in control group, and so were the sputum negative conversion rate and the cavity shrink or close rate ( P 0.05 ). CONCLUSION: Astragalus root injection, combined with antiphthisic chemotherapy, can enhance the cellular immunity of lung tuberculosis, speed up the focal healing and is helpful in sputum negative conversion.
