Expression of p16 and Cyclin D_1 in uterine endometrial carcinomas and its significance

AIM To study the expression and significance of p16 and Cyclin D 1 in human uterine endometrial carcinomas. METHODS The expression of p16 and Cyclin D 1 was exa mined in malignant, borderline and benign uterine endometrial tissues by immunohistochemistry SABC methods. Monoclonal antibodies against p16 and Cyclin D 1 were employed. RESULTS The positive rates of p16 expression among the malignant, borderline and benign tumors were 40%, 68% and 0 respectively. Significant difference was observed ( P 0.05) in malignant tumors. The expression of p16 was associated with pathological grades and no association was found with clinical phases. Cyclin D 1 expression was negative in benign tumors and the positive rates in malignant and borderline tumors were 53% and 21% respectively ( P 0.05). In uterine endometrial carcinomas, no association was found between clinical phases and pathological grades. CONCLUSION There is an overexpression of Cyclin D 1 and a lower expression of p16 in uterine endometrial carcinomas and the synergy of the expression of p16 and Cyclin D 1 may contribute to the development of uterine endometrial carcinomas.
