Effect of Yang Yin antitoxic capsule on the damage of relevant internal organs of rat caused by prednisone

AIM: To explore the effect of Yangyin Antitoxic Capsule (YC), a preparation of traditional Chinese medicine, on prednisone-caused adrenal ultrastructure damage in adult rats. METHODS: Forty adult SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: hormone group treated with 3mg prednisone acetate slices, YC group treated with 3mg prednisone acetate slices and 1g YC, GW group treated with 3mg prednisone acetate slices and 1g Guifudihuang Balls (GW), and control group treated with normal saline. YC, prednisone and GW, dissolved in normal saline and directly perfused into stomach, were given alternately every other day for 12 d. The ultrastructure changes of zona reticularis cells in rat adrenal cortex were observed 24 h after the final administration. RESULTS: Electronic microscope (EM) showed that in prednisone group heterochromatin increased in some cells, entoblast was not obvious in some cells, fat drops were small and few, mitochondria vacuole were common, and myelin figure was found in smooth endoplamic reticulum. The ultrastructure in YC group was almost normal and megamitochondrion formation was common. A large amount of fat drops were found in cytoplasm in GW group and little improvement was found compared with that in prednisone group. CONCLUSION: YC can markedly improve the early-stage prednisone-caused adrenal ultrastructure damage in rats.
