Effects of total glucosides of paeony on active Heymann nephritis in rats

AIM: To study the effects of total glucosides of paeony (TGP) on active Heymann nephritis (AHN) in rats. METHODS: The rat models of AHN were induced by intra-peritoneal administration of kidney homogenate and Freund's adjuvant. AHN rats were divided into 3 groups: AHN model group, TGP group and dexamethasone group. The control group was only given normal saline solution. Serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, total protein and 24-hour urinary protein were observed. RESULTS: In TGP group, the serum urea nitrogen, creatinine and 24-hour urinary protein significantly decreased (P0.01 or P0.05) while the serum total protein significantly increased, compared with those in model group. But no significant difference in renal cell histological pathology was observed between TGP- or dexamethasone-treatment group and model group. CONCLUSION: TGP is effective in the treatment of hypernitrogenemia, proteinuria and hypoproteinemia in AHN rats.
