The Coleoptera is the most diverse group of all organismal lineages, and has been split into four suborders. The Colopetera is a monophylic supported by the present comparative morphological research. However,it is polyphylic deduced by the molecular systematical research. The earliest fossils attributed to the Coleoptera are from the Lower Permian and they resemble modern beetles, especially in the structure of the pterothorax and abdomen.Coleoptera is generally thought to be more closely related to the Neuropteroidea than to any other group of Holometabola, however,it is thought to be related to the Strepsiptera sometimes. In this article, the research progress on the important hypothesis on the phylogeny of the suborders of Coleoptera, sister group relationships and fossil records are reviewed and the further research of Coleptera phylogeny is prospected.
