Reactive Power Planning Based on Improved Particle Swarm Optimization with Static Voltage Stability

A reactive power planning method based on improved particle swarm optimization is presented. This method can effectively improve the quality of initial particles and eliminate the boundary oscillation in traditional particle swarm optimization. The voltage stability margin index is used to rank load buses and reactive power compensators are installed at nodes with weak voltage stability. The maximization of voltage stability margin is taken as one of objective functions of reactive power planning to improve the static voltage stability of power system. Application of the proposed method to IEEE 30-bus system shows that this method can effectively improve the voltage stability margin of load buses while reducing the power loss.
