Application of Battery Energy Storage Devices in Suppressing Low-Frequency Oscillation of Power System

It is proposed to suppress power system low-frequency oscillation by battery energy storage (BES). The feature of the proposed method is that it can rapidly absorb or send active power and reactive power from or to power system while the active power and reactive power are independent each other and without mutual interference. By use of commercial software PSS/E and taking the simulation of a 4-machine 2-area power system and East China power grid for example, the effects of suppressing power system low-frequency oscillation are compared while the BES is installed in different locations and different capacity under different control modes. Simulation results show that the location where the BES is installed, control mode and control strategy as well as the capacity of BES greatly impact on the effect of suppressing power system low-frequency oscillation.
