Investigation and Analysis of Electric Equipment Damage in Sichuan Power Grid Caused by Wenchuan Earthquake

In 12th May 2008, Ms8.0 earthquake hit Wenchuan area, Sichuan province in China.It should be one of the most destructive earthquakes since P.R China established in 1949.The quake not only caused too much loss of life and wealth, but also quite damages to the electric equipments.For this reason, an expert group of China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI) is organized and went to Sichuan province for field investigation.As a summary of this investigation, in this paper the damaged equipments such as transformers, switchgears, post insulators, arresters and substation buildings are described.The analysis on the reason causing the damage in Sichuan power grid shows that the quake intensity beyond the equipment safe class is the principal cause of large-area damage of Sichuan power grid.The special structure and material of electric equipments make them damage easier in earthquake.According to the investigation, some advices for power system to reduce loss in earth quake are presented.
