NEW ADVANCES IN ENVIRONMENTAL MINERALOGY OF NATURAL OXIDES AND HYDROXIDES OF IRON AND MANGANESE

LU An huai,\ LU Xiao ying,\ REN Zi ping,\ HAN Li rong, FANG Qin fing, HAN Yong(National Lab of Mineral and Rock Materials,China University of Geosciences,Beijing 100083,China)  
Natural oxides and hydroxides of iron and manganese with surface charges and variable valence elements have relative surface activities on absorption, oxidation and reduction. They can absorb heavy metals of Cr 6+ ,Pb 2+ ,Hg 2+ ,Cd 2+ ,As 3+ ,Cu 2+ ,Zn 2+ ,Co 2+ ,Ni 2+ and anions of NO - 3,PO 3- 4,F -,S 2- at different conditions. They can also absorb, decompose and transform organic compounds of phenol, ethane, ethylene and organic acid as well as inorganic compounds of CO\-2,NO\- x and SO 2.. The methods of treating polluted water, soil and air by the environmental properties of the minerals are of characteristics of economical, effective, recomtaminationless and retrieve metals. It opens up a vast range of prospects for researching and utilizing of environmental mineralogy.
