FLUID INCLUSIONS IN MANTLE XENOLITHS: EVIDENCES FOR FLUID-INVOLVED MANTLE PROCESSES

Mantle-derived xenoliths and xenocrysts, which are transported to the Earth's surface by alkali basalts and kimberlites, represent a valuable window leading into the interior of the Earth and can provide direct information on the nature of lithospheric mantle and mantle processes. A large amount of fluid inclusion data has been acquired from ultramafic xenoliths from mantle-derived mafic rocks during the past decades. The fluid inclusion in mantle xenoliths records the history of processes involving mantle fluids. The element partitioning between fluid and mantle minerals is important to constrain the composition of mantle fluids and the nature of metasomatism. This article reviews the progresses in studies of fluid inclusions in mantle xenoliths, together with those in recent high p-T experimental researches on element partitioning between fluid and mantle minerals, and discusses the important roles of fluids in the Earth's mantle.
