Health-based risk assessment of contaminated sites:A case study

on the basis of the methods of health-based risk assessment of contaminated sites and the investigation of organic pollution in the A factory in Changzhou,East China, we assess the integrated human health risk of soil, air and groundwater contamination. It is concluded that the pollutants are four monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which may bring pathological changes in liver and kidney, degenerate the nasal epithelium and impair the motorial coordination capacity. There are three exposure pathways for workers inside the factory and the residents living downgradient of the factory. This assessment indicates that workers inside the factory, who simultaneously contact the contaminated soil and breathe polluted air, would suffer non-carcinogenic impacts with total multi-pathways non-carcinogenic hazard index for toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene and cumene being 2.82×10~-2, 4.94×10~-2, 1.21×10~-7 and 1.05×10~-7 respectively, the total two pathway multi-substance hazard index being 4.26×10~-5 and 7.76×10~-2 respectively, and the total exposure hazard index being 7.76×10~-2. Residents living downgradient of the factory, who drink contaminated groundwater, would suffer non-carcinogenic impacts with total multi-substance hazard index being 1.55×10~-5. The hazard indices all are less than unity and the non-carcinogenic health risk of this factory is negligible.
