Titanium resource and the environmental effects of sponge titanium production in China

Sponge titanium is the basic raw material to produce metallic titanium.However,the Kroll process,the only metallurgical process to produce sponge titanium in industry,is a complex and difficult process with poor environmental compatibility and the high production cost.This paper focuses on titanium resources,the resource and energies consumptions,environmental effects of sponge titanium production,and sustainable development of titanium industry in China.The reserve of titanium resources in China ranks first around the world,with the characteristics of high proportion of lean ore and low proportion of rich ore.Most of the titanium deposits are polymetallic coexisting ores.The technical and economical indexes for the chlorination step,the reduction-distillation step,magnesium electrolysis step and the overall Kroll process in China and abroad are compared.The environmental effects of the Kroll process are discussed.The current status of the new titanium metallurgical process is reviewed.Two points are essential to ensure the sustainable development of titanium industry.Firstly,the dependence on imported titanium resources need to be reduced via utilization of the abundant ilmenite resources in China;secondly,the resource and energy consumptions,waste emissions and production cost of sponge titanium need to be reduced through process improvement or development of new processes.
