HUMAN DIMENSION IN THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

Zhang Peiyuan\ \ Ge Quansheng(Institute of Geography, CAS, Beijing, 100101)Lü Ming\ \ Chen Xiaorong(Beijing Normal University, Beijing, 100875)
Global change may be one of the urgent international issues in the coming century. Because of humankind′s unprecedented importance as an agent of global change and the potential for future environmental changes to alter societal arrangements, no one would argue that there are not intimate connections between human activities and change in globe. What connections should exist between natural science research on changes to the Earth system and the social investigations of the human dimensions of global change is explained in brief. Generally speaking, human dimension is one of the subsystems in the global change, however, it has not been given the name of subsystem, but dimension. This is based on its special characteristics. The mankind is able to select her activites whe ther to cope with the environmental change or not. So we have to select more fluxible model to meet such characteristics. The vulnerability of a system in response to climate change is discussed and as examples, the impacts of climate change on vulnerable systems, such as sea level, agriculture, forestry, fishery and human health are explained.
