PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF SELENIUM AND MOLYBDENUM ON HYPOXIC MYOCARDIAL INJURY

Liu Songyan
In the study the effects of selenium (Se) and molythebdenum (Mo) on superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity in erythrocyte and myocardium, formation of malondialdehyde (MDA), creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities in myocardium were investigated in the NaNO_2 poisoning rats fed on grains cultivated from Keshan disease endemic area. The following results were obtained: SOD activity n erythrocyte was remarkably higher in the rats fed on grains from the endemi(?) area than in those on the same diet supplemented with Se, Mo and Se plus Mo, and on the grains from non-endemic area. Addition of Se caused a significant reduction of MDA formation in myocardium, but addition of Mo had not such action. Addition of Mo caused a marked reduction in the leakage of myocardial CPK and LDH. The results suggest that the protective effects of Se and Mo on myocardium are achieved y means of the distinct ways. The machenisms of Se and Mo effects are discussed also.
