In this paper,we investigated the changes of myocardial thyroxine 5'-monodeiodinase of rats fed grains from a KD endemic area and the preventive effects of selenium and vitamin E. The results showed that myocardial T4 5'-monodeiodinase activities were significantly reduced in rats fed grains from an endemic area. This enzyme activity was effectively enhanced through Se or VE supplementation to the diet. We suggest that change of thyroic hormone (TH) metabolism in myocardial tissue due to damaging myocardial T4 5' - monodeiodinase may pay an important role in KD myocardial injury.
