Effect of doping rare-earth elements on the lattice of Ni(OH)_2

The effect of doping rare earth element La and Nd on the lattice of Ni(OH) 2 was researched for the first time. The results show that the lattice constant of Ni(OH) 2 is changed, expecially the c axis is increased by doping the ion with high valence. Therefore, the proton diffusion property of the material is improved and the resistance during electrochemical reaction is decreased. In addition, the local energy level of Ni 2+ is decreased and large amount of positive defect is imported by the doping. The Ni(OH) 2 material doped with rare earth elements has more OH - amount and higher proton diffusion coefficient compared with the material without doping, so its electrochemical properties are improved.
